چکیده

In vitro grown cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) seedlings exposed to excess molybdenum (Mo) ions exhibited severely reduced plant growth at the cotyledonary stage. Adding 80 mM proline (Pro) to the Mo-treated medium could help 50% seedlings to overcome the toxicity and grow true leaves. Under excess Mo stress, seedlings accumulated blue/purple anthocyanin in their cotyledons and hypocotyls. The anthocyanin content under Mo with 40 mM Pro was 4-fold higher than the control medium, MS with 40 mM Pro. The presence of Pro in the excess-Mo condition reduced chlorophyll a, whereas the chlorophyll b content was much higher than the control media of MS with and without Pro. Moreover, supplementing various concentrations of Pro into the Mo-stressed condition promoted the seedlings with higher antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidate, and catalase. In addition, genes in the anthocyanin biosynthesis and accumulation pathways, phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS), flavonone 3-hydroxylase (F3H), leucoanthocyanidin dioxygenase (LDOX), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), were all upregulated. Our study indicated that, under excess Mo stress, the antioxidant activity of cabbage seedlings was induced in an attempt to protect plants from the Mo-induced toxicity and exacerbated growth. Pro, on the other hand, functioned in producing higher antioxidant enzyme activity to partially help recover plant growth.

The Induction of Antioxidant Enzyme Activities in Cabbage Seedlings by Heavy Metal Stress

Cabbage seedlings grown in vitro were exposed to excess levels of heavy metals, including Cd, Mo, and Zn. High metal levels affected plant growth at cotyledonary stage. Seedlings under Cd, Mo, and Zn treatments could not produce root hairs and true leaves. Under stress conditions, seedlings accumulated a higher amount of anthocyanins in their cotyledons than those in the control. The pigments i...

Protective role of exogenous SNP against heavy metal toxicity in Brassica oleracea (var. Capitata) Narsingh Bahadur Singh*, Himani Singh and Sunaina

The present study is focused on the importance of SNP, a NO donor, as Cd stress modulator on seedlings of cabbage. The exogenously applied Cd induced stress in cabbage seedlings to explore the protective role of SNP. 21-day-old seedlings were grown in Hoagland solution and Cd at 0.5 and 0.7 mM concentration with and without SNP. The biophysical and biochemical parameters were analyzed. Cd exhib...

PEG imposed water deficit and physiological alterations in hydroponic cabbage .

Drought is one of the major environmental problems in agricultural field worldwide. The present study investigated the effects of water deficit caused by exogenous application of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) grown in hydroponic culture. Root length, shoot length, dry weight, and relative water content of the seedlings significantly decreased in dose dep...

Effect of salicylic acid on cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. Capitata) grown under salinity stress. Sunaina and Narsingh Bahadur Singh*

The effects of salicylic acid (SA) on growth and metabolism of Brassica oleracea var. Capitata under salt stress was studied in a hydroponic culture. NaCl at 50 mM concentration and SA at 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5mM concentrations were used as treatments.  The results showed that salt exhibited inhibitory effects on shoot and root length, fresh and dry weight, and RWC of the seedlings. NaCl at 50 mM co...
